The city of Pensacola is slated to start construction Monday of a new roundabout at the intersection of Langley Avenue and Hilltop Drive.

The $633,000 project is intended to provide safe entry and exit from the Hitzman Park complex, as well as to improve traffic flow along Langley Avenue. Weather permitting, construction is expected to take about 90 days.

The project will include aesthetic enhancements such as landscaping, brick pavers, pedestrian sidewalks and stormwater management features.

The project will also provide access to a set of new soccer fields planned for a new section of Hitzman Park the city acquired in a land swap with the YMCA of Northwest Florida last year.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured on Langley Avenue between McAllister Drive and Hibiscus Road. This lane closure will continue for the first 30 days of the project. For the remainder of the project, both eastbound and westbound roads will be closed to through traffic, which will continue through Oct. 8.

Accommodations for local access to residential properties during this period will be required by the contractor and closely monitored by the city.

The construction of the soccer fields is being advertised for bids over the next two weeks and is expected to go before the City Council in September.

The Pensacola City Council awarded a contract to Panhandle Grading and Paving Inc. of Pensacola to complete the roundabout project.
